What is this?
This blog, I suppose that is what this is, is a curation of beautiful things that have always resonated with me and made me love and be fascinated by the South. It is an ode to southern culture, people, and art. But I will be very upfront and say that by no means is this all southern. To some extent it is just as much an ode to the outdoors, ruralism, Tennessee, Nashville, home, southern feminism, badass people, romanticism, or nostalgia. It is deeply personal, a combination of all things I love and am inspired by that continually draw me back to the region I grew up in: the South.
This curation is a combination of photographs, craftsmanship, music, novels, short stories, poetry, and people that I feel embody a sentiment that is southern in their roots and vibe. This is my curation of content, but will also get contributions from friends, family, artists–well known and not so well known.
As an ethnographer and anthropologist by trade, it will be hard for me not to caveat everything and continuously be acknowledging the missteps of the South, but that is not the purpose of this; it is to express and share things I find beautiful and remind me of the region I call home. I think, as a modern educated southerner, we are constantly at odds with the region’s terrible crimes but also the beauty the region has produced. It is the beauty that we know and love. Alas, that is not the purpose of this curation; if anyone would like to have those discussions, I am always down, because I think they are so important, but this is not the platform.
I am not claiming this to be innovative, original, or even unique. There are many publications across the board that execute so well on showcasing the South, I am not pretending to be them. For example, I could not think more highly of Gun and Garden’s content highlighting and featuring the best of the region–I will even be pull from them. But, as I have said, this is my personal curation to satisfy my creative desires.
In the end, zero people will read this blog, so I suppose it really does not matter– other than I want to lay this all out for myself.
